The feast has ended, but Guarino's patio, affectionately referred to as "the Garden" is still open while the weather permits. From an intimate dinner for two to a one hundred person wedding reception, the garden has accomodated the full gamut of romance during the 2010 season. We look forward to being the location of your next romantic night out.

While enjoying the trumpet vines, grape vines, and natural beauty of the garden at Cleveland's Oldest Restaurant, be sure to try our veal saltimbocca. This southern Italian fare is made of veal, pounded thin and lightly breaded, then pan-fried until a golden brown. Atop the veal is a layer of prosciutto ham, mushrooms, white onions, and provolone cheese. The final piece is sauteed in a francaise white wine sauce with lemons. Come and enjoy!

It's that time of year again!! The annual "Feast" as we have termed it. The 4 day long festival where Clevelanders from near and far come to honor the blessed Mother and walk the historic streets of Little Italy. Starting on Thursday August 12th and going until Sunday August 15th the streets from the top of the Mayfield Hill down to Murray Hill Road will be closed to guests can walk freely thru the streets enjoying various samplings of Italian food and sweets from the areas local restaurants. Behind the Church in the parking lot there are rides and games for the younger crowd, music roars all about the street with bands, DJs, and Italian singers keeping things exciting! The galleries are open extra late so people can shop while they eat and drink! Tents line the streets with various "Fair food" options to offer. Some are authentic Italian foods while others may be the yearly kettle corn and cinnamon roasted nuts tent or the clams on the corner. The Mayfield Smoke shop features hand rolled cigars for guests to enjoy while chowing down on a bowl of homemade cavatelli and meatballs from my favorite....you guessed it, Guarino's!

Yep, it is that time of year again. You can feel it in the air. It's hot outside, the days are getting a bit shorter and school is just around the corner. Each year this is a reminder to me that the annual "Feast" is coming. My family works long and hard hours with our cavatelli stand out front of Guarino's and a bar in our parking lot under the tent, Grandpa sells his t-shirts, and we can't forget about the inside of the restaurant too! Inside Guarino's offers a special "Feast" menu for customers to enjoy if they prefer a more relaxed sit down meal rather than "stand food" on the streets.

As that last Church bell rings and they prepare to put the Blessed Mother away, I stand with my family and smile as we know....another Feast has come and gone, Summer has come to an end, and yes....just 365 more days until the Feast comes again; the craziest 4 days where we get to come together and share in our livelihood as a family.

Plan Your Intimate Wedding at Guarino's

It took one year for my husband and I to decide where we were going to get married. Guarino's had special significance to us, but it seemed nontraditional so we struggled making a decision to have our wedding there or not. After agonizing over our plans for our nuptials, we both agreed that it was the perfect place for us to say "I Do." We only had an intimate affair of about 50 of the people closest to us, but the restaurant could accommodate well over 100 if we so chose. The day of the wedding was perfect. The patio was set up with an isle runner, white chairs, and a white arch adorned with flowers. Guarino's already offers plenty of natural beauty inside and outside with all of the Victorian decor, the water fountain and pond outside, lights, plenty of live flowers and other various artifacts that make this restaurant the true gem that it is. Guarino's recommended a violinist for the ceremony that added such a whimsical and elegant touch to the affair. Our guests enjoyed champagne, water, and a beautiful fruit display before and after the ceremony while we took pictures around the restaurant. We were not sure on a location for our professional photos to be taken either. Go figure. Indecisive again! It wasn't difficult for the photographer to find at least 20 different spots right on the property to take amazing photos of us with family and alone. The Victorian parlours upstairs, vintage photos behind the 1900s bar, elegant shots in the brick courtyard: it looked like they were straight from Italy. Everything about the day was perfect. The ambiance, the lighting, the setting, just perfect! Guarino's served as the most excellent and fitting place for my husband and I to have our wedding. From beginning to end, Nancy went above and beyond to make sure our day was EXACTLY how we wanted it. When we ask our patrons "How is everything?" we regularly receive a nod of affirmation that we've provided a lovely dining experience. A recent answer to that question was, "Cleveland's Most Romantic Outdoor Dining" experience. We take extra pride in that response.

Meet Carmen Puntel - 10 Year Veteran Cook!

If you've visited Guarino's Restaurant over the past decade, chances are you've heard of their fiery kitchen master, Carmen Puntel. Carmen, son of Guarino's waitress Marilou, has served Cleveland's Oldest Restaurant as a waiter, bus help, food expo, prep chef, and cook over the past ten years, and can operate in every aspect of the business. Carmen's favorite work in the kitchen is along the appetizer line, where he takes special pride in making "Gamberi alla Guarino," an appetizer made up of fresh shrimp wrapped in prosciutto and sauteed with garlic and olive oil.

Carmen is an unlikely success story in the restaurant industry. Several years ago he was diagnosed with Leber's Disease, a unique illness effecting his vision. While many may pack up and retire when faced with this predicament, Carmen has risen above life's challenges and become a true asset to Little Italy and Guarino's Restaurant. Next time you visit Guarino's be sure to send your compliments to Carmen Puntel in the kitchen, who makes every entree with a smile.

Meet the Chefs

Over the past 90 years, Guarino's kitchen has been led by many faces. It began in 1918 with Vincenzo and Mama Guarino, who ran the kitchen independantly into the 1950s. Luigi Guererra had a long tenure from the 1950s through the 1980s and adding wonderful flavor to the menu. Working with Luigi was Della Marinucci who trained Kim Battle, then a "salad girl" who became head cook until 2002. Our wonderful history has been thoroughly enriched by our two most recent head cooks in the kitchen: Mira Ceco and Flutra Mani.

Mira and Flutra are both European natives who have become American citizens in the past decade and settled in as an integral part of our Guarino's family. Mira began working as a prep cook in 2001, while Flutra began assisting Mira in 2002. With Mira coming from a family restaurant in Europe, she brought some new flavors with her to Guarino's and livened up our classical fare such as our Veal Scallopini pictured above.

Both Mira (pictured at above left) and Flutra (right) have brought several family members to work at Guarino's. Mira's husband, Jimmy, and her son Garry, have assisted in the kitchen for two years. Just a few years ago, RJ, son of Flutra, was one of Guarino's most popular servers (known for his charisma and good looks.) RJ is now in college studying film production. Both Mira and Flutra look forward to cooking for you when you come to Guarino's.
